I'm confused by this thread. In reading other threads, it seemed that it was possible to use a Garmin 430 (non-WAAS) for nav and a separate, higher data-rate WAAS GPS 'puck' into serial port #1 for position info and faster screen updates, even for older 4500S units. Is this incorrect? Must I upgrade to a 5000 series screen to add a WAAS GPS puck for position?

    Thanks,

    Charlie

No, I'm using it with my 4500s. I have my GTN650 connected to my PFD and the AFS GPS to my MFD. Works just fine.

Thanks, Bob; that sounds like good news. What about using both with a single screen, where the gps nav data enters via ARINC & position/screen updates come from the external puck via the serial port? (Hope I'm using correct terms...)

I don't have any experience with this set up, but if you have enough ports, I wouldn't think there would be an issue. You will need to validate with AFS. You can only have one GPS source active at any time.

Each EFIS is capable of using 3 data sources (GPS, NAV, or GNAV). One would be your 430 ARINC and one your GPS puck.
