afs approach plates and 430w nav updates.

Working on my ifr training and have an instrument question.

    Two 4500's and a 430W.

the 430w is the certified ifr unit so I have to update the nav info on a monthly cycle for those months I'm IFR.

As to the approach plate database through AFS, is this also a monthly database that has to be updated every month?

Alternatively, as long as I have current approach plates somewhere in the plane, can I use an expired AFS approach plate for geo-referenced guidance?

So, two databases every month? Or some work around?

Or am I totatlly misunderstanding? If so, a little guidance (small pun) would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

Yes, approach plates must be updated as well. There is no workaround if you want to be legal. Both have to be current to fly IFR.

While data for a specific approach may not change often, you have no way of knowing when there are changes.

The only potential workaround is that you only have to have a single set of current charts and plates onboard. That could be WingX, Foreflight, or paper, then compare them with the AFS version to see if the data is the same. There is no alternatives for the GPS data.

Since most of the charts are based upon Seattle Avionics data, it would be nice to get an "Aircraft License" for all the products that use their data. Having to buy the same data in different formats and platforms does get expensive.
