AFS 3500 altitude bump when shutting off autopilot

A friend has an RV9A with a single screen AFS 3500 EFIS and an AFS autopilot. When he disconnects his autopilot from the EFIS screen there is a very pronounced altitude bump. But when he disconnects the autopilot from the AFS autopilot head there is no bump. What could be causing this?
I have an RV9 with dual AFS 4500 with a TruTrak 385 Vizion autopilot and have never experienced this regardless of how I disconnect my autopilot.

The only thing we can think would be something related to being out of trim. At disconnect the servos should no longer command the control surfaces. Is this consistent every time?

Happens every time. Aircraft was not out of trim. We verified that by having the airplane in perfect trim before engaging the autopilot. Tried that numerous times and got the same result.

I'd have to defer to the TruTrak support for this. During a ENGAGE/DISENGAGE we send a simple dedicated command over the serial port.
