Thread: Garmin Visual Approach VDI Capture

    Garmin Visual Approach VDI Capture

I fly with a single 5600 touch screen and a Garmin 750 nav/comm for my Nav 1, and the Garmin SL-30 for Nav 2. The auto pilot is a TruTrack built specifically for Advanced Flight back when the two companies had merged. The Garmin 750 provides Visual Approach procedures for all runways at recognized airports. When the VA is activated and the aircraft enters the proximity of the 3 mile straight in final the Vertical Deviation Indicator needle appears showing above the glide slope. If the VNAV is activated per the 80% rule, shouldn’t VDI be captured like an ILS approach?

When flying a published GPS approach with a GPS Navigator the autopilot is responsible for capturing and following the glide-slope. Unfortunately, the Visual approach is slightly different so the autopilot never captures. I agree this is would be an excellent feature so please look for this in a future software release.

The Visual Approach works in my RV-10 with our Dynon Autopilot and a GTN650. I suspect this is a software problem with the TruTrak, does the Trutrak show ARM?

No ARM on the TruTrak. I did make sure to have a 20* intercept well outside the 3 mile final and below the glide scope. The VDI did display on the Altitude bar so I assumed it might capture but it did not.

I’ve tried it a couple times without an issue. It arms with my Vizion.
