    Drifty Magnetometer

I have a non-S 3500 and a 4500 with a X-Bow magnetometer. The mag compass reading on the 4500 has been drifting off so I did a magnetometer realignment on Saturday. Worked great on two flights. Today I ran into the same problem - way off, about 15 degrees out of adjustable range. No changes in the presence of magnetic items in the cockpit/baggage area. Sounds like a bad magnetometer? If so are there any plug and play replacements?

The magnetometer takes about 1 minute to integrate changes in heading the rapid changes in heading are handled by the AHRS itself.

Does this 15° error happen quickly or over 1 minute?

OK, Shawn, here's what I did....I ordered a new magnetometer from you, installed it and ran the calibration twice. It's still off, sometimes out of adjustment range, when I first start up. My recent flights with it haven't been longer than 0.5 but it usually comes back into adjustable range after fifteen minutes or so. One other thing I noticed is that my Flight Path Marker is nowhere to be seen, even when the magnetometer agrees with the mag compass. Could I have another bad magnetometer or could it be something else on the 4500?

Try this worksheet on heading errors then we can see if its mag or AHRS.
