Thread: Upgrade from the 4500 to 5600

Upgrade from the 4500 to 5600

On the 5600 PFD I am using a 496 for GPS navigation, and the AF-Pilot autopilot. I also have an Arinc429 that is all to be interconnected with the GPS data to get full functionality out of my 5600.

    Garmin GPS:
If I connect the data out from the 496 to term 17 on the AF-pilot and terminal 10 on the 5600 PFD would this be correct? If I add another wire from terminal 22 on the 5600 to 7 on the AF-Pilot would this be correct?

    Arinc429:
AF-pilot terminal 14 to terminal 13 on Arinc connector.
AF-Pilot terminal 15 to terminal 25 on Arinc connector.
    Would these be correct?

    AF-GPS:
I am also adding the new AF-GPS 73102 to my 3400 EM as a backup GPS. I notice the antenna takes it power from the OAT terminal 6 on the main cable connector. Where do I pick up the remainder of the connections for GPS data and ground?

    Thanks

    1. The AF-Pilot serial port should be connected to one of the AF-5600 EFIS serial ports (TX and RX).
    manual page 125

    2. The 496 GPS OUT (TX) should be connected only to one of the EFIS serial port RX lines.

    3. If your AF-5600 was built in the last 18 months it is rev 7 hardware (on S/N Tag) and the GPS can be connected to the EFIS Aux port without using OAT power.
    See manual page 152

    Rob,

The 496 GPS OUT (TX) should be connected only to one of the EFIS serial port RX lines.

    1. Can I use a (TX) serial port on another screen? My 3400 EM serial port 1 has nothing connected to it and both screens are connected to share information.

    2. The screen getting the AF-GPS 73102 is my 3400 engine monitor, not a 5600.

    Thanks

What data would you want to transmit (TX) out of your 3400?

The power will come from the OAT power of the EFIS main connector. See the attached document. 73102 GPS Module AF-4500.pdf

I’m upgrading my 4500 to a 5600 EFIS and will be using a 496 for GPS navigation.
Because the AF-Pilot and my Arinc429 all get interconnected with the 5600, I had a few questions on the proper connections with the GPS, to get everything to work properly.

Rob had replied with the following answer about the GPS connection: The 496 GPS OUT (TX) should be connected only to one of the EFIS serial port RX lines.
Then I asked if I can use a serial port from my 3400 engine monitor.

I need to know if I can hook my 496 to my 3400 while my Arinc and AF-Pilot are connected to my pilot side 5600? Which brings up another question.
If I can use my engine monitor to connect my 496 GPS input, I read that if I loose the screen with the GPS hookup, I would loose the ability to use that gps for navigation. Should I then hook up the AF-GPS to the 5600 screen?

    Thanks Shawn

The interconnected EFIS will share their GPS information between each other over the ethernet connection. This is done by configuring the GPS/Nav Data Source on each screen.

A standard install we recommend that you split your GPS input between the screens, normally wiring your primary navigational GPS to the primary EFIS and the backup GPS to the backup EFIS.

This said; you can wire the 496 to the AF-3000 and the 73102 to the AF-5000. This will get the most performance out of the 73102 GPS while still allowing you to use the 496 navigation on the AF-5000.
