    "slave" MFD functions

I have a 4500 Deck with Engine, Map, and AOA, and am considering adding a 3400, principally to (independently) display a map. Would a "slave" MFD serve this purpose, or does it merely mirror what is selected on the primary display?

Yes, a AF-3400MFD would display map data, as well as engine data (and even air data) from your AF-4500. You can pick and choose what you want displayed. If you just want a full screen map and charts, you can do that too.

But, to be perfectly clear, any of those options could be selected and displayed on the slave 3400 MFD regardless and independently of what is displayed on the primary display? For instance, with the primary display showing air & engine data, the slave could display the map?

    Yes, that is correct.
