    Second GPS Source

I have a backup related question regarding a second GPS source. Currently I have a TCW backup battery connected to my AF5600, but I do not have a backup battery for either my GTN650 or the TT autopilot. Since I have a GPS496 available, I’m considering connecting it (somehow) to the AF5600. By doing so I would have a backup battery powered GPS source for the AF5600.

My question is – what is the best way to do this? Is it better to install a switch on the existing GTN to 5600 serial line or use an available serial port on the AF5600? The switch introduces another failure point, but beyond that is there an advantage of one way versus the other?

    Thanks,
    Dick

Since the GTN uses Aviation data and the 496 sends NMEA a switch will not work, you would have to reconfigure the EFIS settings.
