From the AF-Pilot Installation Manual (Page 9):

"The AFS Pilot can follow a programmed flight plan from a GPS, independent of the EFIS system, by pushing the EFIS button. The screen will display EXT LS to indicate that it is following an external
lateral steering signal."

Does this mean the Autopilot gets the Signal from the RS 232 or does this mean the Autopilot gets the Signal from the GPS via the Arincline? (Does this work only with Garmin GNS or does this also work with a Handheld GPS)

Thanks
Markus

The AF-Pilot follows the ARINC signals and a handheld GPS does not have them.

Sorry to dig up old threads, but trying to learn about features/uses/etc.

If the AFS Pilot must have ARINC to navigate, what's the gps input on pin 17 for? Just to tell the AP the compass heading that the plane is flying? I can understand not following vertical signals, but it won't follow course deviation signals from a portable via the serial port?

The AF-Pilot needs ARINC (GPSS and GPSV) signals if it will be driven by a NAV or EFIS source. The AF-Pilot also has the ability to follow a GPS heading fed from a GPS device. This can be fed by the EFIS or a standalone device.

Pin 17 should be fed by the a 1200, 2400, 4800 or 9600 baud signal of NMEA-0183, Garmin Aviation Format, Apollo/UPSAT MovingMapor GPSS format. This provides directional reference to the autopilot.
