I have a five year old 3500 installed into an RV7. The RV has two batteries and when one was run completely flat the engine was started on an installed back up and flown. The primary battery cannot be charged by the alternator from dead flat so the secondary battery was used during the flight.

Apaprently this has been done on one other occassion before without causing a problem.

During this flight however the circuit breaker for the EFIS popped and failed to reset. the EFIS ran on the internal battery and the plane returned to land (15 minutes later). The circuit breaker has been tested and is working. The EFIS will operate on internal power but on the test bed pos the circuit breaker (immediately).

Any thoughts on what the problem might be or remedies?

What size breaker is it?

It sounds like your breaker is weak.

Rob

It is a 3amp breaker which should be OK. I am thinking short in the power supply some where?
If so is this a repair or swap out?

3 amps. I am thinking short in the power supply? If so is local repair likley to be an option?

Are you sure it is actually using more than 3 amps?
or
Switch the wire to the backup power pin and try it.

also.. make sure you have protection diodes on the master relay and starter relay.

Because the starter relay has a power lead instead of a ground to flip it, where does the other end of the diode connect to?

err... or does it? I'm a little confused by the diagram in aeroelectric. When I installed everything I put the diode on the master solenoid, but I ended up leaving off the starter solenoid diode because I couldn't quite figure out if it was the same as the master or not.
