I'm just wondering if there is any plan to support the WX-500 lightning detector for those of us who live in parts of the world that are not covered by NEXRAD?

Failing that, would it be possible for the AFS 3500 to support providing the HDG info to GNS 430W via ARINC?

I have a WX-500 connected to the 430W in my panel. Garmin tells me that the 430W will not forward the heading info from the AFS to the WX-500 if it receives it via RS-232. I assume it must be via ARINC as per the G-500 or ASPEN EFIS – which work in this configuration.

At present it looks like I will be able to view the dedicated lightning pages on the 430W but not see the stike info on the map.

Thanks
Richard

Well, Just in case someone else out there wants to do this I will answer my own question. The AFS 3500 + ARINC converter does supply heading to the 430W and, the 430W forwards correctly to the WX-500. This means the WX-500 is now fully functional with the 430W. I am not sure if this will still work without the ARINC unit but I guess most people with a 430W would buy ARINC.

To check if the GNS 430W is receiving heading information from the EFIS system you can look on the main inputs page in the 430W’s configuration mode. Any of the parameters listed on this page are coming in on the serial data busses either RS 232 or ARINC 429. If you see heading information on the main inputs page the GNS 430W will send the heading info out on the RS 232 bus to the WX 500.

It would be nice to see the strikes on the AFS map, but I am guessing but the deafening silence that there are no plans to support that.

Cheers
Richard

Richard, glad you were able to figure it out! At this time we don't have any plans to display WX-500 strikes on our display. That doesn't mean we won't consider it in the future though.
