View Full Version : Transponder question and an issue

We have an RV10 with a 5800T and a 4500. Each screen independently displays AHRS and air data based upon setup guidance from support earlier this year. This redundancy is nice; however, we are experiencing an issue with the 2 screens disagreeing. Frequently during flight, mostly during roll attitude changes, we are seeing AHRS mismatch messages on both screens. Generally, the 5800 is telling the truth, but not always. The condition corrects itself in 20 to 30 seconds, but that can be bad news in IMC. The difference can be as much as 15 degrees in roll. Where do we start on diagnosing this problem?

The second question concerns the transponder. We updated to 12.08.04 and we are now seeing a Transponder Upgrade Available message. We updated the SV network after the update to get rid of the error, but cant figure out how to shake the transponder message. Is this a software update that came with the OS or is this something we download separately? Are there instructions available on how to load it?

Thank you in advance!
Russ

You probably need a third reference to tell which display is correct. The 4500 will have a slower response if it has an internal Crossbow AHRS.

On the 5800 go into calibration, SET -> Hold CAL, then Transponder page, at the bottom of the page is the software update. Once you update the software be sure to power cycle the transponder otherwise you will be sending it back for service.

Shawn,

Thanks for the quick reply. We do have a GRT mini for a tie breaker. I understand that the 4500 is a little slower, but it seems hard to believe it would take 20 seconds to "catch up." I will watch it slowly correct itslf back to reality. We hate to just give up on the unit as it as we have enjoyed it. Just to be sure, there is no calibration or correction that can be done? Before the 5000 series, Im sure people relied on the deck in instrument conditions.

For the transponder, is it OK to power the screen down at the same time and power cycle the whole circuit? Or must we just power cycle the transponder individually with the screen still powered up?

The Xbow are becoming old units and slowing down / becoming unstable with age.

The screen can be power cycled at the same time as the transponder. Its not necessary but wont hurt.

Would an additional SV-ADAHRS on the 4500 solve the problem with the older Xbow units ? I am sure there are a lot of them out there (I have two) and to just retire them seems a little extreme.

SV-ADAHRS can only be connected to AF-5000 R7 hardware. They could be converted to use the AF-AHRS (Red Box).

So, if the XBow is becoming slow and unstable, what is the answer to keep the 4500s operating effectively?

They could be converted to use the AF-AHRS (Red Box) or upgrade to the AF-5000 with a SV-ADAHRS.
